I’ve been wanting to try making homemade gummies with the girls for a while, and we finally did it! I honestly didn’t realize how simple they would be.
We used freshly squeezed oranges and lemons, beef gelatin, and a little water. That’s basically it. The girls helped pour the mixture into little fruit-shaped molds, which obviously made the whole thing more fun, and they ended up loving them.
One of the reasons I wanted to make our own was to incorporate beef gelatin into something the kids would actually enjoy eating. Gelatin is rich in amino acids like glycine and proline, which our bodies use to build collagen and support connective tissues, including our skin, joints, cartilage, and bones.
And unlike store-bought gummies, these are made with fresh fruit juice and you get to control exactly what goes into them.
Ingredients
- 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 2–3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- ¼ cup hot water
- 3 tablespoons beef gelatin
- 1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, optional
How to make it
- Juice your oranges and lemons and combine the juices.
- Take about ¼ cup of the juice and sprinkle the gelatin over it. Let it sit for a few minutes to bloom. It will thicken up quite a bit—this is exactly what you want.
- Add the hot water and stir until the gelatin has completely dissolved.
- Stir in the remaining fresh juice. Taste and add a little honey or maple syrup if you want your gummies sweeter.
- Pour the mixture into silicone molds.
- Place them in the refrigerator for about 1–2 hours, or until completely set.
- Pop them out of the molds and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Notes
And if you have extra…
I had some mixture left over after filling all of our molds, so instead of wasting it, I poured it into a small Pyrex dish and added fresh orange slices before putting it in the fridge.
And honestly, I think I’ll be making it this way for myself from now on.
It was SO easy. No individual molds to fill! Just pour, refrigerate, slice, and eat. Next time I’m planning to make a bigger batch this way to keep in the fridge for myself.
A little tip: If you prefer a firmer, chewier gummy, you can increase the gelatin to about 4 tablespoons. And there’s no need to boil your fresh juice, you only need enough heat to fully dissolve the gelatin.
Such an easy little recipe, a fun activity to do with the kids, and a simple way to incorporate gelatin into our diet. 🍊🍋
Enjoy!
